Aga Khan Centre
The new Aga Khan Centre in London’s King’s Cross provides a new home for a number of UK-based organisations founded by His Highness the Aga Khan.
The 10,000m² centre, designed by Fumihiko Maki, one of Japan’s most distinguished architects, houses the Institute of Ismaili Studies, The Aga Khan University Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations and The Aga Khan Foundation UK.
One of the key features of the building is its six gardens, courtyards and terraces which have been inspired by Islamic landscape design from around the world – from Spain, North Africa and the Middle East to Central and South Asia.
The first and second floors house teaching spaces which sit alongside a covered courtyard known as The Garden of Tranquillity. The Aga Khan Library, with its specialist collections, capacity to house 100,000 volumes and study spaces, can be found on the third and fourth floors and benefits from the Terrace of Learning, intended to encourage outdoor study. The three institutions occupy floors five to eight.
The top floor has three roof gardens – The Garden of Life, The Garden of Light and The Terrace of Discovery – all surrounding an executive suite of meeting spaces.
