Chiswick Boathouse

The Quintin Hogg Trust and Quintin Hogg Memorial Fund have secured planning consent for a high profile community/university sports project on the north bank of the River Thames, adjacent to Chiswick Bridge.

The proposals include a new Boat Store, Rugby pavilion and all-weather pitch, together with the conservation and refurbishment of the existing boathouse, home to Quintin Boat Club and the University of Westminster Boat Club.

The 7.5 acre site is the venue for the finishing crews and presentations following the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. London Borough of Hounslow officers praised the design approach, led by architects Assorted Skills + Talents*, to the group of new buildings and the setting, in Metropolitan Open Land, adjacent to the Listed Chiswick Bridge and landmark historic boathouse.

The original timber boathouse, funded and built by Quintin Hogg in 1888, founder of the Regent Street Polytechnic (now the University of Westminster) was replaced by the current boathouse in 1922 and partially rebuilt following bomb damage in World War II. Today all the buildings on the site are in a very poor state of repair.

The proposed development secures the future of the boathouse for its original purpose and offers safe and secure storage for more than double the number of boats, providing the critical mass to underpin an outreach programme with opportunities for wider community use. The new all-weather pitch and pavilion will provide a home for University Rugby and other sports such as American Football and Soccer.
