Challenge
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) sought to transform its existing building at 35 Lincoln's Inn Fields into a state-of-the-art facility that would serve as a hub for addressing global issues. The challenge was to adaptively reuse the post-World War II structure to create LSE's first net-zero carbon building, incorporating modern academic and conference spaces while preserving significant elements of the original architecture.
Solution
To achieve this ambitious goal, LSE appointed G&T to provide Cost Management services for the development of the Firoz Lalji Global Hub. The project involves retaining over 60% of the existing structure, including the principal façades, and extending the building by two storeys using a lightweight timber structure. The design includes teaching spaces, digital labs, and a 250-seat theatre, all centered around a flexible agora space intended to foster new ways of learning and interaction. Our expertise in cost management ensures that the project aligns with LSE's financial and sustainability objectives.
Outcome
Upon completion, the Firoz Lalji Global Hub will stand as LSE's first net zero carbon building, exemplifying the university's commitment to sustainability and innovative education. The adaptive reuse approach not only preserves the building's historical significance but also reduces environmental impact. G&T's role in managing costs effectively has been instrumental in advancing the project towards its goals, ensuring that the new facility will provide cutting-edge resources for academic and global engagement.
