Learning & Teaching Building

Shaping a new era of student experience

Combining learning, collaboration and support in a purpose-built hub

Client

University of Strathclyde

Location

Glasgow

Sectors

Size

20,000m²

Challenge

The University of Strathclyde aimed to consolidate its dispersed teaching spaces, student services, and union facilities into a single, cohesive building at the heart of its Glasgow campus. This initiative involved the refurbishment and adaptive reuse of the existing Colville Building and the Category B-listed Architecture Building, alongside the construction of a new connecting hub. The project presented challenges in integrating modern educational requirements within heritage structures, all while minimising disruption to ongoing university operations.

Solution

G&T provided Project Management services throughout the development of the Learning & Teaching Building. Collaborating closely with the university and design team, we ensured that the project was delivered on time and within budget, while meeting the complex requirements of a multifunctional space. The facility encompasses over 20,000m² of space, including a 400-seat lecture theatre, various teaching and learning environments, student support services, and the student union. The adaptive reuse approach not only preserved the historical significance of the existing buildings but also contributed to sustainability goals by reducing embodied carbon.

Outcome

The completed Learning & Teaching Building has become a central hub for students and staff, enhancing the university experience through integrated facilities and services. The project's success is reflected in its recognition at the AJ Retrofit Awards 2022, where it won in the Higher Education & Campus category. G&T's strategic project management was instrumental in realising the university's vision, delivering a facility that meets contemporary educational needs while respecting its historical context.
