Mathematics: The Winton Gallery
Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, the new Mathematics: The Winton Gallery at the Science Museum brings together over 100 artefacts from the museum's science, technology, engineering and mathematics collections.
The gallery explores how mathematicians, their tools and ideas have helped build the modern world over the past 400 years - from trade and travel to war, peace, life, death, form and beauty.
At the centre of the gallery hangs the 1929 Handley Page 'Gugnunc' aeroplane - the inspiration for the gallery's design - built for a competition to construct safe aircraft. Huge three-dimensional curves form a canopy over the space representing the air that would have flowed around this historic aircraft. The aeroplane's wing design was influenced by pioneering aerodynamic research and is used in the gallery to show how mathematics can be used to solve practical issues.

Mathematics: The Winton Gallery is the first permanent public museum exhibition designed by Zaha Hadid Architects anywhere in the world. The gallery is also the first of Zaha Hadid Architects' projects to open in the UK since Dame Zaha Hadid's sudden death in March 2016.
