Challenge
The National Trust for Scotland (NTS) is responsible for conserving and promoting some of the country’s most cherished historic and natural assets. Many of these sites face critical conservation issues, including structural decay, water ingress, and outdated visitor infrastructure. Projects such as the Hill House in Helensburgh and Corrieshalloch Gorge in the Highlands presented unique challenges, demanding sensitive interventions that would respect heritage and landscape while improving public access and engagement.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management, Project Management, and Principal Designer & CDM Consultancy services across a series of NTS projects. At the Hill House, we led the design and delivery of the innovative protective ‘Box’ enclosure, allowing vital conservation work to proceed while keeping the building open to the public, while at Corrieshalloch Gorge, we coordinated a multi-disciplinary team to deliver new visitor infrastructure—balancing safety, accessibility, and environmental sensitivity. Our role also ensured health and safety considerations were fully embedded in the design and construction process from the outset.
Outcome
These projects have secured the future of vital cultural and natural landmarks. The Hill House has become a celebrated case study in conservation innovation, offering a new model for public engagement with preservation work. At Corrieshalloch Gorge, enhanced facilities now offer an improved visitor experience with minimal ecological impact. G&T’s multi-faceted role was central to delivering these outcomes, ensuring that complex, high-profile heritage projects were completed safely, on time, and with lasting social and cultural value.
