Challenge
Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) sought to enhance its educational infrastructure by developing a new School of Business and Management. The objective was to create a 6,400m² facility that would integrate social learning, teaching, and study spaces, alongside administrative and support areas. The challenge lay in constructing this building on a constrained site adjacent to the Regents Canal conservation area, necessitating meticulous planning to address logistical complexities and ensure minimal disruption to the existing campus environment.
Solution
To realise this vision, QMUL appointed G&T to provide Cost Management and Project Management services. G&T collaborated closely with the Local Authority and the University to develop a comprehensive work plan that facilitated the relocation of key infrastructure within the Mile End Campus. This plan ensured continuous campus access while effectively segregating staff, students, and the public from construction activities. The building's design incorporates high-specification IT facilities to support blended learning, and replaces traditional academic offices with hot-desking spaces to accommodate new ways of working.
Outcome
Upon completion, the new School of Business and Management will serve as a modern educational hub, offering versatile spaces that cater to evolving pedagogical approaches. The facility's strategic location at the public gateway to the campus enhances QMUL's presence within the community. G&T's expertise in Project and Cost Management has been instrumental in navigating the project's complexities, ensuring the delivery of a state-of-the-art facility that aligns with the University's commitment to providing exceptional educational environments.
