Challenge
The SEC Hydro (now OVO Hydro) project involved constructing Scotland's premier large-scale entertainment arena on the former Queens Dock site in Glasgow—a complex addition to the existing SEC campus. The unique auditorium design, large translucent ETFE façade, and integration with adjacent venues (SECC and the Armadillo) presented significant challenges in cost precision, material benchmarking, and delivery coordination within a masterplan for 64 acres of active site regeneration.
Solution
G&T provided Cost Management services and led value engineering, contract negotiation, and cost control for the main arena, the multi-storey car park, and associated infrastructure. We employed extensive benchmarking and lifecycle cost analysis to manage the innovative ETFE façade, the structural shell, and integrated M&E, ensuring cost certainty without compromising the architectural intent.
Outcome
The completed SEC Hydro boasts a 12,500-seat bowl, a dynamic ETFE exterior that glows at night, and vaulted integration into Glasgow’s riverside cultural quarter—now ranking among the world’s busiest arenas. G&T’s commercial stewardship ensured financial discipline, supporting the delivery of this landmark within budget while safeguarding design ambition and long-term operational resilience.
