Heathcote School Visits LREF 2017

Listening to Londoners

The London Real Estate Forum (LREF) launched a new Community Preview afternoon for the 2017 conference programme.

The Community Preview afternoon allowed access to the exhibition space to members of the local community, where they had the opportunity to attend discussions on developments happening in their neighbourhood, hear from others about local projects, new schemes and innovative initiatives.

As host of the LREF NextGen reception and champion of the next generation of property and construction professionals G&T invited students from the Design Engineer and Construct! (DEC!) course to attend the event as a follow up to their studies, encouraging them to understand how their work could be put into practice in the real world.

Adopt A School is a scheme that was created by social business ‘Class of Your Own’ (COYO) that enables schools to teach the qualification ‘Design, Engineer, Construct!’ (‘DEC!’) through funding from the private sector. Find out more about the Adopt a School programme by reading our news story here

The DEC! Level 3 course requires students to design their own buildings and consider social initiatives that could benefit the local community that will be directly affected through their proposed development. The Community Preview allowed the students insights to real life situations through a number of presentations and gave them the opportunity to develop their own projects based on the outcomes from previously tried and tested schemes.

Heathcote School and DEC! teacher, Andy Dolan, commented:

"The opportunity to meet with professional people within the built environment and construction industry is something that will always be beneficial to young people. Learning about this industry with people of all backgrounds currently employed by national companies is an amazing opportunity and one that cannot be underestimated. The students were able to learn about potential employment opportunities in the future and make links with companies that may be able to support the students in their pursuit of a future educational and employment pathway within the construction industry."
