NLA Summer Academy 2018

As part of the NLA Learning Programme, G&T hosted the Architectural Design Academy, where 14 students had the opportunity to explore a career within the built environment.

The construction industry continues to experience a skills shortage and with a significant number of professionals due to retire over the coming years it is now more important than ever to attract new people into the industry. As such, G&T supported a week long NLA Summer Academy, encouraging students to consider a career in architecture, construction and design.

Selected from 40 applicants, the individuals had all expressed an interest in the field, and the academy offered them a chance to meet industry experts and develop their knowledge and understanding of the built environment.

The week was themed the ‘Eastern Cluster of tall buildings in the City of London’ and the teams spent time exclusively visiting the 22 Bishopsgate site, bringing to life the suggested improvements of their chosen areas. Volunteer-run workshops had the student’s focus on easing flow, minimising traffic, prioritising pedestrians and improving greenery and public space. The course gave them an insight into a dynamic London, understanding that all aspects - from buildings to bike routes - shape our city.

As part of the academy, industry professionals hosted career talks, representing the great range of job roles available, including site managers, architects and engineers. G&T Senior Project Manager Chantal Brill discussed her role within the construction industry so far, offering insight into the diverse opportunities available within the built environment.

Chantal is a member of G&T’s Next Generation programme and as such has formed a professional network whilst developing a great deal of knowledge within the industry. G&T’s Next Generation Programme invests in the future leaders of the industry, creating opportunities for established professionals to connect and collaborate with emerging G&T talent.
