G&T has launched a NewGen programme focussing on the promotion of diversity and inclusion within the built environment, with the overall goal of addressing the current skills shortage.

“Our NewGen programme is evolving! We are adapting the programme to suit the post-pandemic world, continuing to promote diversity and inclusion within the industry”

Lucy Cunningham

G&T NewGen Champion

The NewGen programme is a 12 month programme of events and opportunities supporting young people from across the UK to learn about the variety of career opportunities available within the built environment.

As a firm we strongly believe in driving positive social change in the communities and boroughs we work in, which given the current climate has never been more important. By working with charities and industry bodies we want to help create opportunities of social mobility for children in schools or boroughs where they might not otherwise have them.

Before lockdown we partnered with the charity 15 Billion to take part in their building skills workshop at Brampton Manor Academy and hosted a number of career advice and mentoring sessions as part of New London Architecture’s Learning Programme.

Since lockdown, we have continued our work with 15 Billion creating digital content explaining the career opportunities available for students in the built environment.

Plans are also underway to host a Careers Carousel with the charity, in collaboration with our NextGen partners, offering year 12 school children the opportunity to meet volunteers working in the industry and practice their job seeking skills.

Most recently we took part in The Land Collective’s virtual internship offering students at sixth form and university the opportunity to gain construction and commercial property experience whilst physical internships are unable to take place. 164 students took place from 69 universities worldwide, with more than 80% of the participants being from BAME backgrounds.

By working with these organisations, charities and our NextGen industry partners WPA, CPA, NLA and Revo Hub we can highlight the career opportunities for young people in the industry and reach a wider more diverse group of students.
