In light of the current Covid-19 crisis and to ensure conversation and collaboration continues across the industry New London Architecture (NLA) has launched a new digital series of events. Part of this programme includes the launch of a NextGen Sounding Board, looking at dynamic new ways of thinking and working.

The NLA NextGen programme connects young professionals with peers in the industry, allowing them to expand professional networks and develop skills. G&T is proud to have championed the initiative since it first began in 2015. This evolution will bring new ideas and innovative concepts to the programme, with expertise from all areas of the built environment.

The first meeting of the sounding board took place at the beginning of May, introducing members and discussing how people had adjusted to life during lockdown, including what different companies had been doing to keep in touch with employees and also what the future might be for building and city design.

During the meeting, Selasi Setufe, Public Practice Associate at BeFirst and Co-founder of Black Women in Architecture, highlighted one of the key issues her company was facing as a result of COVID-19:

“One of our key concerns was how we were going to address issues around engaging with the community. This was easier on projects where the consultation process had already begun but we needed new methods to tackle those that were just about to begin.”

G&T Associate Director, Nancy Elgarf, spoke about the importance of engaging with clients and contacts to keep projects moving:

“It’s important to us to keep engagement with the project team high throughout the duration of a scheme…this helps us to understand the impact that Covid-19 might have on project progression and ensures we come up with a response collaboratively.”

Moving forwards the group will focus on ‘what-if’ scenarios, planning for the future of London and what the easing of lockdown might mean for the businesses, buildings and streets of the capital. The group will bring perspectives across engineering, architecture, landscape, construction, professional services and development as well as many other disciplines encouraging a truly diverse cross sector, multi-disciplinary discussion. G&T is excited to be part of this new exchange of ideas and looking forward to what the future opportunities this may bring.
