As a pioneer of the Better Buildings Partnership Design for Performance Initiative,  MEPC is pioneering Design for Performance at 4 Angel Square at NOMA in Manchester and 11&12 Wellington Place in Leeds, pledging to work with the industry to improve the sustainability of commercial building stock currently under development.

Both these commercial developments will provide smart building experiences for all stakeholders and support the zero-carbon campaign within the built environment.

“These projects in Leeds and Manchester are great examples of developments that are setting out on an ambitious trajectory to meet net zero ambitions."

Sarah Ratcliffe

CEO, Better Buildings Partnership

G&T partner Jim Boothroyd has supported both firms throughout the process by managing the design team and establishing an assessment matrix to weight, appraise and select technical options that offer the greatest performance benefit and return on investment through long-term operating efficiencies.

Jim commented: "MEPC is truly pioneering sustainability and efficiency at 11&12 Wellington Place and 4 Angel Square, which will be the first of a kind for Leeds and Manchester. These projects demonstrate how effective the Design for Performance initiative is at improving operational energy performance within commercial buildings and will undoubtedly set a benchmark for future commercial developments. We are delighted to be working with both MEPC and Better Building Partnerships."

The use of the NABERS Design for Performance approach will help ensure alignment between how the buildings have been designed to perform and how they perform in practice, supporting the projects' ability to meet the net zero operational targets set by the UK Green Building Council and working towards NABERS ratings for both new buildings.

Sarah Ratcliffe, CEO, Better Buildings Partnership said: “These projects in Leeds and Manchester are great examples of developments that are setting out on an ambitious trajectory to meet net zero ambitions. We are delighted that MEPC is becoming a Pioneer and backing up these intentions with the Design for Performance approach to ensure that these projects deliver on their promises.”

11-12 Wellington Place

Paul Pavia, Head of Development, MEPC commented: “Designing and delivering schemes like this is not only our industry’s environmental responsibility; it is our commercial responsibility too. With net-zero looming on the horizon, sustainability is undoubtedly going to be a major factor investor and occupier demand, which may be further intensified by tighter climate policies in the near-future. We are happy to be involved as Pioneers in the Design for Performance initiative.”

The Better Buildings Partnership Design for Performance Initiative is a collaboration of commercial property owners whose aim is to deliver building performance, improve professional understanding and stimulate market transformation.
