COP26 at Skypark: A Small Project with a Big Message

Proof that the most interesting commissions often come from humble beginnings is our latest project for Britel Fund Trustees at Skypark, Glasgow. A temporarily vacant site at Skypark in Finnieston was utilised by the Federated Hermes Fringe Village to facilitate a programme of events for COP26, including lending the space to climate groups.

The design team, including G&T as cost manager and Woolgar Hunter as civil engineer, was appointed to deliver a temporary surface, temporary drainage and secure hoarding project that carefully considered the values of COP26 in the design process. The groundworks were completed in October 2021, ahead of schedule, to make way for the erection of the enclosed COP26 event space, located close to the Scottish Event Campus – a key host of the summit.

A MacRebur surface made from non-recyclable waste plastics was specified in lieu of a standard asphalt surface for sustainable reasons, which was laid on a recycled type 1 sub-base with a crushed demolition capping layer. 4,000kg of fossil fuel (Bitumen) was saved from extraction as part of the project using this alternative surface specification in addition to 4,000kg of waste plastic diverted from landfill or incineration - which equates to 727,000 single use plastic grocery bags. 6,200kg of C02e was also saved from the project helping to develop a circular economy.

Following its temporary use the site will be developed for commercial use and G&T has been involved in the initial feasibility studies on this. Our cost managers have delivered a number of commissions at Skypark including demolition works on the temporary surfaced site, office fit-out works, car park deck repair works and alterations to existing retail units.

Skypark offers serviced business space over three sites in Glasgow city centre. As a key supporter of The World’s To Do List campaign which aims to raise awareness of and action for the 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development, Skypark hosted the first physical activation to go live in Scotland with the giant sticky note ’13. Tackling Climate Change’. The artwork overlooks the COP26 summit venue as a reminder of the immediate action needed to be taken.
