Planning permission has been granted by Southwark Council for the transformation of the former Daily Mail printworks at Canada Water into offices.  The new building is targeting NABERS 5.5, BREEAM ‘Outstanding’, WELL Gold and Net Zero Carbon Development.

Designed by Hawkins\Brown, the scheme, known as The Printworks, will create 45,504m² of offices and retail by retaining the large press halls and spine of the existing building while also using the existing central void as an atrium.  G&T is providing Cost Management services on the development which, up until recently, was used as a nightclub.

The development will also see an extension to the southern end of the existing building, as well as a roof extension standing at five, six and seven-storey high and facing a new park. The new building will also include conference and performance space.

“The redevelopment of the Printworks will result in the retention and reuse of this iconic building, to create a best in class and flexible workplace, and alongside this, our intention is to work with Broadwick Live and Southwark Council to explore retaining a cultural venue in part of the Printworks.”

The Printworks is the latest project to be granted planning for the first phase of British Land and Australian Super JV’s Canada Water Masterplan. Covering 53 acres, Canada Water is one of the largest mixed-use regeneration projects in London and will deliver 2.5m sq ft of workspace, up to 1m sq ft of retail, leisure and entertainment space as well as up to 3,000 new homes – 35% of which will be affordable.

G&T’s continued involvement in the Canada Water development includes a number of projects already on site as well as emerging projects. We are currently providing Cost Management services on Plot A1 – a 35-storey residential tower block incorporating offices and retail and Cost Management and Life Cycle Costing services on The Dock Shed (A2) – a six-storey office building with a new leisure centre for Southwark Council in the basement. We are also providing Cost Management services on K1 which will see the construction of 79 apartments for the London Borough of Southwark to offset the private apartments in Phase 1A.

G&T also provided Cost Management services for the recently completed TEDI-London Campus – a sustainable development with a unique modular design.

The first phase of the Masterplan is scheduled for completion by 2024.
