British Land and AustralianSuper have submitted plans to Southwark Council to redevelop the Printworks site into a permanent cultural venue, working with music and arts operator Broadwick to preserve the famous halls.

G&T is providing Cost Management services for the Hawkins\Brown designed scheme which comprises a flexible leisure and cultural venue occupying half the existing building with the other half made up of workspace and retail in a space known as The Grand Press.

"G&T is excited to be part of the team bringing this disused building back into use and shaping a landmark cultural venue for generations to come."

Once home to the printing presses that produced newspapers including the Daily Mail and Evening Standard, the Press Halls will host live music events, concerts, immersive art exhibitions and corporate events while The Inkwells include a performance space for immersive exhibitions and intimate music events below ground. A new rooftop terrace will be added as well as a series of new suites for meetings and conferences with views of the Press Halls.  As much of the original printing equipment as possible will be salvaged, including the four-storey, 150 tonne last press with its final paper roll.

Emma Cariaga, joint head of Canada Water at British Land, said: “We want to deliver a permanent world-class cultural venue at Printworks buildings that builds on its globally acclaimed legacy. Combining the best of the capital’s culture with next generation workspace at The Grand Press will create an unrivalled destination, which generations will benefit from for years to come.”

The Printworks is the latest project to be granted planning for the first phase of British Land and AustralianSuper JV’s Canada Water Masterplan. Covering 53 acres, Canada Water is one of the largest mixed-use regeneration projects in London and will deliver 2.5m sq ft of workspace, up to 1m sq ft of retail, leisure and entertainment space as well as up to 3,000 new homes – 35% of which will be affordable.
