Aerial view of car park at London Luton Airport during rebuild following fire

Project Phoenix

In October 2023, London Luton Airport experienced a major fire in Terminal Car Park 2, a multi-storey facility for c.2,000 vehicles. The fire caused severe damage, leaving the structure unsafe and resulting in significant vehicle losses.

The recovery project included four key areas: safely demolishing the fire-damaged car park and removing contamination, recovering and salvaging c.1,300 trapped vehicles, fast-tracking a new drop-off zone before the summer peak and constructing a new multi-storey car park with strict cost control and value engineering.

G&T played a crucial role, working closely with LLA’s team, managing the safe demolition and vehicle recovery, creating a compliant procurement strategy as well as selecting contractors via the Crown Commercial Services Framework. We successfully delivered the new drop-off zone on time, materially reduced car park construction costs through value engineering and supporting the airport’s insurance claim process.
